A letter of authorization is sometimes called a letter of recommendation. When applying for work, your possible future employer will ask for a list of references. If you merely give a list of references, your employment may not be immediately assured of your qualifications for the job. But, if you submit letters of authorization from references also known as letters of recommendation from references that are allowing you or giving you permission to use their name, address and other contact information, your employment prospects are much better assured. You should use a letter of authorization whenever you submit another person's name as reference since your right to submit someone's elses name might be questioned; and, the process to verify whether you have the right to use someone else's name might take some time. A letter of authorization from a former employer will make a better impression than merely a telephone number and a name. Some new employers may hesitate to call without preliminary investigation of your credit history and other information that is readily available from many sources available to employers. But, a letter of authorization or permission to use your past employer's name and contact information is a welcome addition to your resume or to your letter of application. Some past employers who have not given you a letter or authorization to use their name and contact information might react in a negative manner when contacted by new future employers. Getting a letter of authorization from past employers is your first step in getting a new job. If your can't get a letter of authorization from a past employer, don't give more information about him on your job application than you are entitled to give, and always annotate that you have not gotten his permission to use his contact information for your benefit. Rules of etiquette in the labor market are very stringent and names and contact information are seen as private property whose use requires the owner's permission. It is always wise, if you have letters of authorization from people who know you, and who are willing to corroborate your qualifications, to leave these letters of recommendation wherever you go to apply for work.
